My brakes are not making any noise. Does that mean they are fine?

Not necessarily. Brake pads do include a wear indicator that produces a squealing sound as the pad approaches minimum thickness, but that indicator is not always reliable — some pads wear in a way that keeps the indicator from contacting the rotor until the pad is dangerously thin, and some drivers tune out the sound before acting on it. Rotors can develop significant wear, heat damage, or thickness variation without producing any noise at all. The most reliable way to know the actual condition of your brakes is a physical inspection that measures pad thickness and rotor condition directly rather than relying on sound as the only indicator.

How do I know if my brake fluid needs to be replaced?

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the atmosphere over time through the rubber hoses and seals in the system, and that absorbed moisture lowers the fluid's boiling point. Fresh brake fluid boils at over 400 degrees Fahrenheit — fluid that has been in service for several years in a humid climate may boil at significantly lower temperatures under hard braking, producing vapor in the lines that compresses and causes a soft, fading pedal feel. Most manufacturers recommend a brake fluid exchange every two to three years regardless of mileage. We test fluid moisture content as part of our brake inspection and recommend a flush when the condition warrants it rather than on a fixed calendar regardless of what the fluid shows.

Is it okay to replace brake pads without replacing the rotors at the same time?

It depends on the condition of the rotors. If the rotors are within their serviceable thickness range, have smooth surfaces without deep grooves or heat cracking, and show no significant runout, new pads can be installed without rotor replacement and the system will perform correctly. If the rotors are at or near minimum thickness, have surface damage from worn-out pads, or show warping that causes pedal pulsation, replacing the pads alone will not restore proper brake feel or safety.
